Dr Gab Astorga gives keynote talk for IBM

This week, Dr Gab Astorga spoke at a special event for LGBTQ+ History Month hosted by IBM in partnership with DXC Technology.

Gab’s talk, ‘the man in the middle of the phylogenetic tree’, explored the story of Gaëtan Dugas who posthumously became vilified as ‘Patient 0’ of the AIDS epidemic and the role of researchers from Gab’s field, genomics, in ​exonerating him. It was a powerful exploration of how scientific advancements can correct harmful cultural narratives.

It was an insightful afternoon overall, including a panel discussion that explored experiences across tech and STEM fields, the progress that has been made and the work to come; a demonstration of IBM’s AI-powered programming with Project Bob; and a look at the coming future of quantum computing.
