Dr Kevin Fong hosts panel of astronauts for OMEGA Speedmaster Anniversary

12/05/2025

In April, to celebrate 60 years since NASA approved the OMEGA Speedmaster watch, OMEGA invited Dr Kevin Fong to host a conversation with a panel of astronauts at their London Covent Garden boutique.

On the 1st March 1965, after 11 rigorous tests, NASA declared the OMEGA Speedmaster to be ‘Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions.’ This day was the official beginning of OMEGA’s journey beyond Earth, which has since included every Moon landing in history and many of the greatest missions of our time.

Introduced by Lucien Jornod, VP Marketing of OMEGA, the audience of VIPs & members of luxury watch press were treated to fascinating stories from this long history, including how the Speedmaster played a critical role in keeping time during launches and on the Moon.

The panel consisted of:

  • Charlie Duke—Apollo 16 astronaut, lunar module pilot, and the youngest person to ever walk on the Moon.
  • Dr. Kathy Sullivan—the first American woman to walk in space, a geologist, oceanographer, and former NASA astronaut who has also ventured to the deepest known point of Earth’s oceans.
  • Nicole Stott—NASA astronaut, engineer, and artist. Nicole has spent over 100 days in space, served aboard both the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, and now uses her unique perspective to connect humanity through art.

Dr Kevin Fong has a long-held professional experience in spaceflight, including hosting BBC Worldwide podcast 13 Minutes to the Moon about the Apollo missions. He currently hosts Sixteen Sunsets about the shuttle programme.
