Election analysis and expert commentary from Northbank speakers

With local elections due next month in the UK, a general election inching closer and elections scheduled around the world, Northbank speakers provide invaluable perspectives on how political shifts will impact businesses, from regulatory environments to consumer behaviours, international relationships and new technologies such as AI.

Dr Gerard Lyons is a leading economist and highly influential analyst.

With over thirty years in senior roles in the City and public policy, he has advised both Gordon Brown as PM and Boris Johnson as Mayor of London, spoken in 82 countries, testified to committees of the US Congress and Senate and the UK’s House of Commons and Lords.

Drawing on this wealth of experience, Gerard provides key insights into the economy leading into and coming out of the upcoming election. He can also speak to the global economic and financial outlook, from future growth in the Gulf and Middle East to new globalisation, the green economy, and China and the US.

Caroline Wheeler is the political editor of The Sunday Times and has been a parliamentary reporter for over 15 years, breaking numerous agenda-setting stories.

She boasts an insider’s knowledge of government and Whitehall and has impeccable contacts with senior politicians, leading business figures and civil servants. As such she’s perfectly suited to offer pre-election insights and post election analysis.

Caroline is also the author of Death in the Blood on the NHS contaminated blood scandal, which she has reported on for over two decades. The scandal led to Rishi Sunak’s first parliamentary defeat and an inquiry due to deliver its final report on 20 May.

One of Britain’s best known and most respected political pollsters, Joe Twyman is co-founder and director of Deltapoll.

Formerly Head of Political and Social Research at YouGov, from 2007 to 2010 he was based in Baghdad as a director of YouGov’s Iraq operation. He frequently provides expert analysis for TV, radio and newspapers both at home and abroad.

His talks are lively, engaging and anything but dry, covering everything from Big Data and AI’s coming applications; how the way we think about policy and democracy has changed and will change; how to critically evaluate opinion data; and how the history of sex research explains the difficulties of understanding what people actually think.

Harriett Baldwin was elected as the Member of Parliament for West Worcestershire in May 2010.

She has served as Economic Secretary to the Treasury (City Minister); Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Defence, responsible for the £178 billion Defence Procurement budget; Minister of State for Africa; the UK’s representative on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly; and Chair of the Treasury Committee.

Prior to politics, Harriett enjoyed a successful 20 year career as a Managing Director at JPMorgan, specialising in currency markets for pension funds.

With her combination of international political, financial, and corporate experience, Harriett speaks about women in politics and finance, financial outlooks, and crypto currencies. She is also available for after-dinner talks on her extensive and varied career in Parliament.
